In 1956, Børge Mogensen – already renowned as Fredericia’s founding designer and a guiding light in Modern Danish design – conceived the 3171 Bench. It is a piece born from his quest for designs that endure: everyday objects crafted with restraint, calmness, and timeless purpose. Mogensen believed that furniture should offer tranquillity, modest beauty, and a sense of order – qualities that resonate deeply in this bench.
The 3171 Bench is the quiet sibling to Mogensen’s 3236 Chair: together they form part of the collection Mogensen designed shortly after his appointment at Fredericia. Where the 3236 expresses his refined yet rustic sensibility in a single-seated form, the 3171 Bench expands on those ideals, offering collective comfort without excess.
Constructed in solid wood, its backrest is hewn from a single piece – a testament to purity of form and a reverence for natural material. The seat, generously upholstered, gives a softened embrace without compromising structure. Clean lines, softened corners, and perfect proportions coalesce to make a bench that is at once strong and inviting.
Over decades, the 3171 has become more than furniture: it is a portal to a quieter home. It invites long conversations, relaxed meals, or moments of pause. Its modest silhouette is not about minimizing presence, but about maximizing grace.
